We are testing different compositions of gas throughout our network in Oban to see how it performs and hopefully demonstrate its suitability for the GB market. This project has three stages: survey, test and a 12 month trial.
Survey: May to October 2014
We surveyed 100 premises in Oban to record details of gas appliances being used (i.e. boilers, gas fires and cookers) and carried out free visual gas appliance safety checks and provided free carbon monoxide detectors to thank people for their time. We've identified the six most common appliances for laboratory tests to see how different mixes of gas perform.
Test: November 2014 to June 2015
We visited every gas customer in Oban, and tested three different mixtures of bottled liquefied natural gas (LNG) on their appliances.
Customers who didn't take part in the initial survey received a free gas appliance safety check and a free carbon monoxide detector.
Trial: July 2015 to July 2016
We’ll inject the new mix of gas into the Oban gas network for 12 months. We’ll conduct 200 spot checks at properties in Oban to see how it performs.
Is it safe?
This project will not pose any risk to customers or the community. Safety is at the heart of everything we do, and we are working alongside the Health and Safety Executive, which is the body responsible for regulating safety in our industry. All our engineers are fully qualified and experienced in their field.
The inspections as a result of our testing will actually create a safer community by ensuring gas appliances are functioning well.
We’ll also be providing information on carbon monoxide safety to our customers and looking for ways we can improve CO awareness in the local community. Read more about carbon monoxide here.
How will you contact customers?
All participants received a letter from the project manager in May. The project manager also wrote to all gas customers in July 2014 to tell them about the gas testing programme.

How will the data we collect be protected?
All the data we collect will be stored securely, in line with SGN’s Data Protection Policy available here and only accessed by SGN’s project team. We will not store any data without your consent and we will not supply customer data to anyone else. All data will be destroyed at the end of the project.
