We are working to upgrade the gas network in Brixton Road in the London Borough of Lambeth.
We are investing £2.4 million to replace our old gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the local area.
We’re nearing the end of our first phase of this project in Brixton Road. We’ve had to suspend our project while Thames Water carries out emergency work to repair a nearby water leak. We’ll resume work on Monday 7 January. During the final six weeks of phase one, we’ll be working between Cranmer Road and Normandy Road. The southbound bus lane will be closed around our site to keep everyone safe. When we’re working near Cranmer Road and Normandy Road, we’ll also need to temporarily close these roads at the junction with Brixton Road.
In consultation with Transport for London and Lambeth Council, we will start our second phase on Monday 18 February.
During our second phase, we’ll be upgrading our gas network along Brixton Road between Normandy Road and Wynne Road. We’ll start work at Hillyard Street and progress southwards towards George Mews over approximately seven months. We will maintain two-way traffic along Brixton Road throughout this phase. However, to ensure everyone’s safety, we need to put lane restrictions in place around our work area in Brixton Road during this phase.
We’ll also be working in Hillyard Street, Groveway, Lorn Road, Robsart Street and Wynne Road. When we’re working in each of these roads, we’ll need to close its junction with Brixton Road.
We would encourage road users to please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey. You can find advice on planning your journey on Transport for London’s website.
We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. By upgrading our network in Brixton Road, we will continue to keep homes and businesses in south London safe and warm long into the future.
