Thornton Heath, Galpin’s Road

This week, we have restarted our project to complete the replacement of the largest gas main in Galpin’s Road, Thornton Heath, with work taking place between South Lodge Avenue and London Road.

In agreement with the local authority, this section of Galpin’s Road will remain closed until the end of July. We appreciate the closure will be a frustration when trying to access London Road, however, this is the least disruptive option for residents over the long term.

On Monday 17 April, we will also start work on an upgrade to a section of our gas main which runs underneath Warwick Road. This is part of our wider programme of work in the Galpin’s Road area and is essential for the continued safe and reliable gas supply across the wider community. We have appointed I&G as our contractor to complete the project.

Due to the position of the gas main, we need to close a section of Warwick Road between London Road and St Stephen’s Church for the duration of the work, which will last around 13 weeks. While this section of Warwick Road is closed, there will be a signed diversion in place via Strathyre Avenue to allow access to London Road.

In addition, we’ll need to work in London Road, at the junction of Warwick Road, between Tuesday 2 May and Friday 2 June. The central reservation in London Road will be removed to maintain the two-way flow of traffic at this location. We may also need to use two-way traffic lights if we encounter engineering difficulties. We will update this information page if this is necessary.

We know London Road is a busy route through this area of south London and we are aware any restriction to traffic is likely to cause significant disruption to the community. Therefore, we will do everything we can, in conjunction with Transport for London, to minimise the impact. Bus stops may also be relocated; please refer to your bus service provider for more information.
