Finchampstead, Nine Mile Ride

Following multiple leaks in our gas network, we will be replacing the old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes in Nine Mile Ride and at the junction of Old Wokingham Road and Nine Mile Ride. This work needs to be started urgently to enable us to continue to provide a safe and reliable gas supply and to minimise the risk of further leaks in the area.

Our contractors, I&G Contractors, will be completing this work on our behalf and will start work on Monday 4 December.

The work will be carried out in two phases:

Update - 3 April 2024

From Wednesday 10 April, we'll be working in Nine Mile Ride for 11 weeks. For everyone's safety, under phased multi-way traffic lights.

Update - 7 March 2024

Our work in Nine Mile Ride is finishing ahead of schedule.

We would like to get as much of the gas pipe network replaced in the community as soon as possible and we will now complete a section of pipe in New Wokingham Road.

To safely complete this work, we will need to install temporary traffic lights in New Wokingham Road this week for approximately seven weeks.

Our combined works in Nine Mile Road and New Wokingham Road will still be completed ahead of the schedule for our original project. This is because of collaborative working between SGN, I&G and Wokingham Borough Council.

How will this work affect me?

  • You may need to plan additional time for your journey.
  • We may need to suspend bus stops or bus timetables may be affected by our work - please check with your local bus provider.
  • We will contact your bin collection team to ensure waste collections are maintained.

Update - 2 January 2024

Phase one has been completed and phase two will start on Wednesday 3 January as planned.

Phase one

We'll be working from Monday 4 December until Sunday 17 December to replace the pipe in Old Wokingham Road at its junction with Nine Mile Ride (at the roundabout).

To complete this work safely we will need to:

  • Close the entrance and exit to Old Wokingham Road from Nine Mile Ride at the roundabout.
  • Install temporary traffic lights approaching the Nine Mile Ride/Old Wokingham Road roundabout to allow traffic to flow past our working area in Old Wokingham Road.
  • Temporarily suspend the bus stop within our work area.

Access for residents and businesses will be maintained and a signed diversion route will be in place.

We will reopen the road for the festive period from Friday 15 December until Tuesday 2 January 2024. Our work will start again from Wednesday 3 January 2024. There will be no carriageway incursion during this period.

Phase two

We will return to Nine Mile Ride on Wednesday 3 January 2024 to replace the gas pipe network in the carriageway between Old Wokingham Road and Palmer Close.

To ensure the safety of everyone around our worksite, we will be closing Nine Mile Ride in phases around our work area where the pipe is being replaced. The phases are planned as follows

  • Nine Mile Ride Roundabout to The Nine Mile Ride/Lupin Ride footpath
  • The Nine Mile Ride/Lupin Ride footpath to Palmer Close (including Palmer Close)

This work is expected to last until late May 2024.

Thank you to the local community for their patience while we complete our work and sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
