We’re replacing the gas main on Shore Road and Sandbanks Road in the Sandbanks area of Poole. Our essential work will provide a permanent solution to the recent emergency gas leaks in the area and will ensure we can continue to provide a safe and efficient gas supply.
Our work will start on Monday 22 April and is expected to be finished by the end of June.
Engineers will be replacing old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipe along Shore Road and Sandbanks Road between the junctions of Chaddesley Glen and Lilliput Road.
Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road, for everyone’s safety, we’ll need to make temporary changes to the local traffic management as our work progresses.
The team will start work at the junction of Brudenell Avenue, heading south along Shore Road to the junction of Chaddesley Glen. Once complete, we’ll then be working northbound along Shore Road/Sandbanks Road between Brudenell Avenue and Lilliput Road.
Temporary two-way traffic lights will be used as we work along Shore Road and Sandbanks Road. For everyone’s safety and to keep traffic flowing, we’ll need to have additional temporary traffic lights and road closures in place as we work past the following junctions:
- Brudenell Avenue (slip road) – closed for the duration of the project for our mandatory welfare unit.
- Brudenell Avenue – temporary three-way traffic lights at the junction with Shore Road.
- Haven Road – temporary three-way traffic lights at the junction with Shore Road.
- Chaddesley Glen – temporary road closure, with no access in and out of Chaddesley Glen onto Shore Road.
- Alington Road – temporary road closure, with no access in and out of Alington Road onto Shore Road.
- Crichel Mount Road – temporary road closure, with no access in and out of Crichel Mount Road onto Shore Road/Sandbanks Road.
- Avalon – temporary three-way traffic lights at the junction with Sandbanks Road.
At this stage, we are unable to provide timelines for these closures and additional lights – our progress will completely depend on the condition of the old pipe and access to local properties for service connections. We’ll keep road users and residents informed with advance warning signs and the on-site team will liaise with residents directly affected.
Please note the following additional restrictions will also apply:
- Cycle lane closures - Shore Road and Sandbanks Road (northern side) – closed to all cyclists and other vehicles from the junction of Chaddesley Glen to Lilliput Road for the duration of our work.
- Parking restrictions – we’ll need to restrict parking/bays as we progress through the programme of work – local warning signs and hoods over parking bays will advise drivers wishing to park.
- Bus services may be impacted – we would advise passengers to please check with your service provider for any changes to timetables and travel times as a result of these works.
Property service connections
As we install the new gas pipe, properties with gas services will need to be connected to the new pipe. Access to properties and gas meters will be required to complete the connection. Residents will receive further information and our on-site team will liaise directly to make arrangements.
