Working to keep you safe and warm

What we're doing

We'll be replacing our old metal pipes in phases along B278 Wrythe Lane. This is part of our 30-year programme of work to replace our old mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new, reliable plastic pipe.

When we're working

Our work will start on Monday 22 January and is expected to last approximately 18 weeks. To help minimise disruption, our project will be carried out in separate phases.

Our work in B278 Wrythe Lane

We'll begin our gas network upgrades in B278 Wrythe Lane on Monday 22 January.

Our engineers will be replacing our old pipes between its junctions with Erskine Road and Wrythe Green Road.

This phase is expected to last approximately ten weeks.

To ensure everyone's safety, we need to close a section of Wrythe Lane around our work area to motorists.

Initially, only the northbound lane will be shut while we upgrade our network. However, from Monday 5 February, we need to close the road in both directions to safely complete our replacement work and connections.

There will be no access to Brookfield Avenue during this phase.

A signed diversion route will be in place for affected road users. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses within the closure area.

Our engineers will then be working near to Wrythe Lane's junction with Wrythe Green Road.

This phase will now start on Monday 26 February which is early than previously communicated. It's unclear how long this phase will now take to complete.

Wrythe Lane will remain closed for safety while this phase of work is carried out.

Wrythe Green Road will temporarily be made two-way during this phase. Entry to Wrythe Green Road will be from West Street.

From Monday 29 April, we'll move back to near Wrythe Lane's junction with Erskine Road.

Wrythe Lane will be closed in both directions around this junction for everyone's safety.

This final phase is expected to last approximately four weeks.

What will this mean for you?

  • Access will be maintained if your home or business is located within a closure area
  • Please check local bus services if alternative stops or timetables are put in place
  • Please advise any deliveries of the closures in place
  • All emergency service vehicles will have access around our closure areas

All our work is agreed in close consultation with the local authority and key stakeholders.

Virtual drop-in session

We're hosting a virtual drop-in session for the community to learn more and ask any questions about our work. This will take place on Tuesday 16 January from 4PM to 5PM.

We understand roadworks can be frustrating. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years. This means that once our work is done, Sutton residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable supply of gas for many years to come.
