Wandsworth, Penwith Road & Heathfield Road

We'll shortly begin essential network upgrades in the Penwith Road area to ensure Wandsworth residents and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.

In close consultation with Wandsworth Highways, our work will start on Monday 10 July and is expected to last approximately 17 weeks. Contractor Forefront Utilities will be carrying out this work on our behalf.

Our work involves road closures and the installation of temporary traffic lights to ensure everyone's safety around our site. This project will be completed in three phases as follows:

Phase one: Monday 10 July to Sunday 17 September

We need to close Penwith Road to eastbound motorists. There will be no access to Penwith Road from the A218. Signed diversions will be in place for affected motorists.

Acuba Road will also be shut to motorists at each of its junctions with Penwith Road for the duration of this phase of work.

From Monday 7 August until mid-September, temporary traffic lights will be in operation along A218 Merton Road at its junction with Penwith Road. These lights will be manually operated during peak hours to help minimise disruption in the area.

Phase two: Monday 18 September to Sunday 22 October

We then need to close Ravensbury Terrace at its junction with Penwith Road.

Our engineers will also be working at the junction of Ravensbury Terrace and Haslemere Avenue. We don't expect to need to shut this junction to safely complete this section of work.

Phase three: Monday 23 October to Sunday 5 November

The next phase of work will be carried out in Magdalen Road.

We'll be working in the footpath between its junctions with Garrett Lane and Tranmere Road. There will be no impact on traffic here.

Phase four: Monday 6 November to Sunday 9 December

We need to carry out an additional phase of work in Ravensbury Terrace. To safely upgrade our network here, we need to close Ravensbury Terrace at its junction with Penwith Road. We may also need to install temporary traffic lights at Haslemere Road when our engineers reach this junction.

What does this mean for you?

  • If your home or business is located within a closure area, access will be maintained at all times. Access will also be maintained for all emergency vehicles.
  • Access to Penwith Road will only be available from the Garrett Lane end. No access is permitted from the A218.
  • We advise you check with your bus/transport provider to see if they will be suspending or relocating bus stops and changing the route while we carry out this work.
  • We may need to suspend some parking bays to ensure safe spaces around our work area.

A second team of engineers is also carrying out separate upgrade work in nearby Heathfield Road. To ensure everyone's safety around this work area, Heathfield Road is closed between Earlsfield Road and Heathfield Square. A signed diversion is in place. This project started on Monday 21 August and is expected to last approximately six weeks.

Garden centre Neal's Nurseries remains open for business as usual during our work. Access to this business is maintained throughout.

We understand roadworks can be frustrating. However, once the work is complete, Wandsworth residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.
