We have completed a £1 million project to upgrade important gas infrastructure in Stranraer, as part of our commitment to deliver a safe, secure, resilient and increasingly sustainable energy supply.

The upgraded kiosk being lifted into place
The project focused on modernising our Stranraer Offtake – the facility where high-pressure gas from the national network is reduced to intermediate pressure before entering the local distribution network which feeds businesses and homes.
As part of the works, a large crane was temporarily brought in to lift the garage-sized instrument kiosk into place. This complex and challenging operation required months of careful planning and preparation.
The investment significantly enhances the site’s monitoring capabilities improving operational safety and system reliability, as well as the accuracy of real-time data monitoring gas flow, pressure and temperature.
“It’s an investment that better helps us serve the people of Stranraer”
Adam Hyslop
Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer
“These upgrades are part of our long-term investment in infrastructure to ensure the gas network remains safe, secure, resilient and fit for the future,” said Adam Hyslop, our Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer. “With more accurate data, we can respond faster to issues while continuing to safely deliver mains gas to our customers in Dumfries and Galloway.”
The upgraded systems enable engineers at our control centre – 427 miles away in Surrey – to rapidly identify and respond to issues which reduces the risk of supply interruptions.
Delivering the project involved co-ordination between SGN teams, suppliers, design partners and contractors. Every stage – from design to installation – was executed with a focus on safety, quality and collaboration.
“Ultimately, it’s about creating a network that’s easier to maintain and built to last,” added Adam. “It’s an investment that better helps us serve the people of Stranraer”
Our infrastructure upgrades are part of a broader strategy of continual investment in the UK’s gas network to support current energy needs, the transition to a low-carbon future and the wider energy system.
