What to do if you smell gas

Smell gas? Call immediately.

Call the National Gas Emergency service if you can smell gas, you think there may be a gas leak or you suspect Carbon Monoxide.

National Gas Emergency service

The National Gas Emergency Service is a free 24-hour helpline. An advisor will take your details, give you advice on what to do and send out an emergency gas engineer. 

The engineer will carry ID with them and will need to enter the property to make it safe. They'll let you know what to do next.

Deaf or hearing impaired? 

You can use the free Relay UK app to contact the National Gas Emergency service using the prefix 18001 0800 111 999.

Follow these 6 steps: 

If you smell gas, DO

Open windows and doors to help ventilate the gas.

Turn off the gas supply at the meter as well as any gas appliances.

Call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.

If you smell gas, DON'T

Smoke or use any naked flames.

Touch any electrical switches. Turning a switch on or off could ignite a gas leak.

Enter a cellar, even if your gas meter is located in the cellar.
