Poole, George Roundabout area

Temporary road closures for urgent gas main replacement affecting the George Roundabout area, Longfleet Road and Serpentine Road

From Monday 27 July until December 2026, our specialist contractors I&G Contractors Ltd will be completing urgent work to replace the gas main along Serpentine Road, Longfleet Road and across the George Roundabout in Poole.

These works have been planned with urgency and are essential to ensure we can continue to maintain a safe and efficient gas supply and avoid gas leaks in the future.

Due to the location of the gas mains in the road, for everyone’s safety we will need to have temporary directional road closures, lane closures, and traffic lights in operation.

The following outlines our intended phased plans – map below shows the location of the work.

Phase one

From Monday 27 July for approximately eight weeks

Location: Serpentine Road and Wimborne Road

Traffic management: Temporary road closure on Serpentine Road at the top end of Serpentine Road, and three-way temporary traffic lights on Wimborne Road/Denmark Lane junction.

This closure will mean:

  • No through vehicle access past the closure in either direction
  • All vehicle access in/out of Serpentine Road will be via The George Roundabout
  • Three-way temporary traffic lights will be located on Wimborne Road at its junction with Denmark Lane
  • Vehicle access to properties on Serpentine Road will be maintained via the George Roundabout end of Serpentine Road

Phase two

From Monday 31 August for approximately 13 weeks

Location: George Roundabout and Longfleet Road

Traffic Management: One-way northbound directional temporary road closure on Longfleet Road between Elizabeth Road and Shaftesbury Avenue, and temporary lane closures on George Roundabout – the roundabout will remain operational and traffic will be filtered into the appropriate lanes.

This traffic management will mean:

  • No vehicles will be able to travel northbound between the junctions of Elizabeth Road and Shaftesbury Avenue
  • Vehicle access to the hospital and properties within the directional closure will be maintained from the southbound lane of Longfleet Road

Phase three

From Monday 19 October for approximately six weeks

Location: George Roundabout and Townsgate Bridge Lane

Traffic Management: Due to large connection points, the taxi rank will be temporarily closed - we will be unable to maintain access for the taxi rank on George Roundabout. Townsgate Bridge will have a temporary lane closure in place as vehicles exit from the roundabout. Traffic will be filtered into one lane exiting the roundabout.

Information for all three phases

  • Vehicle access to properties will be maintained – the site team and signs will keep residents informed of access arrangements as these will change as works progress
  • Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained
  • Bin collection days will remain unchanged unless you hear otherwise from service provider
  • Bus routes will be affected – please check with your service provider for the latest updates/changes to your regular service

We appreciate that this is a busy location and the temporary directional road/lane closures may have a high impact on traffic.

We’re committed to completing the project as quickly and safely as possible, while keeping disruption to a minimum. Throughout the work, we’ll continue to work closely with the BCP Highways teams and other key stakeholders to coordinate activity and keep the community informed.

Further details and progress updates will be available on this dedicated project page.

We’re sorry for any disruption these works may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding.
