Rye, Rye Road

We know that during the coronavirus outbreak, our communities will rely on us now more than ever to keep them safe and warm. The safety of our communities and our employees will remain our number one priority in the weeks and months ahead.

We need to continue with our safety-critical project to upgrade the gas network in Rye. This needs to continue now, rather than wait until the pandemic passes, to ensure your local community continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.

There’s more information about our coronavirus preparations here.

Start date: 23 March 2020

Duration: Six weeks

We’re upgrading our gas network in the Military Road/Rye Road area of Rye.

Phase one

From Monday 23 March, we’ll need to install temporary traffic lights in Rye Road at its junction with Military Road to ensure everyone's safety around our work area. We'll manually control our lights Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm to keep traffic flowing. We'll also need to close Military Road at this junction.

Phase two

From Wednesday 1 April, we will continue upgrading our network on Rye Road, working at its junction with Fishmarket Road and Landgate. For everyone’s safety, we'll need to temporarily close Rye Road around our work area.

In consultation with East Sussex Highways, signed diversion routes are in place suitable for larger vehicles and HGVs, as well as smaller vehicles. These diversion routes also take into consideration any other work taking place on the network, such as Highways England road closures.

Phase one diversion

B2080 Appledore > A259 Folkestone Road > A259 Guldeford Road > A259 New Road > A259 Fishmarket Road.

Phase two diversion

A268 Fishmarket Road > A259 Fishmarket Road > A259 Winchelsea Road > A259 Rye Road > A259 Grand Parade > A2102 London Road > A21 London Road > A21 Sedlescombe Road North > A28 Westfield Lane to A28 Station Road > A268 Whitebread Lane.

We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, Chichester residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
