Upgrading our network in south London

Our gas infrastructure underpins homes, hospitals, schools and businesses across the city. Much of it was built decades ago and, while it continues to operate safely today, some assets are reaching the end of their engineering life.

SGN is investing £30 million to upgrade 15km of our pipes in south London to ensure a safe, reliable and resilient network for millions of people who depend on it every day, while enabling the long-term transition to lower-carbon energy systems.

The five-year programme's next project to start will take place in the Northwood Road area of Thornton Heath. It will begin on Monday 7 September and be carried out in several phases to help minimise disruption to the local community.

Replacing our pipes in Thornton Heath

We're preparing to start essential work to upgrade the gas network in the Northwood Road area of Thornton Heath as part of a £30 million investment programme to replace our old, large metal mains across south London.

It follows close consultation with the local authority, TfL and other key stakeholders, and has been carefully sequenced as part of the wider programme to reduce disruption and impact.

  • Our work will start on Monday 7 September and it's expected to last 14 weeks
  • Road closures will be in place for everyone's safety

Once this project is complete, it will mean we won't have to undertake emergency repairs at short notice. We recognise roadworks can be frustrating, but these upgrades will ensure people will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.

When we'll be working in your street

Phase one

  • Starting Mon 7 Sep
  • Lasting approximately 14 weeks
  • We'll be working in Penrith Road between its junctions with Northwood Road and Cranbrook Road. Penrith Road will be shut between these locations.
  • Our engineers will also be replacing our pipes in Beauchamp Road. This road will be closed between its junctions with Grange Road to Moffat Road.

Phase two

  • Starting Mon 28 Sep
  • Lasting approximately four weeks
  • Moffat Road will be closed between its junctions with Beauchamp Road and Westbrook Road while we upgrade our network here.

Phase three

  • Starting Mon 28 Sep
  • Lasting approximately seven weeks
  • Our engineers will also start work in Westbrook Road. To safely carry out our upgrades here, we'll need to close Westbrook Road between Moffat Road and Burlington Road.

Phase four

  • Starting Mon 26 Oct
  • Lasting approximately three weeks
  • Our engineers will be working in Burlington Road between its junctions with Westbrook Road and Penrith Road. This section of road will be closed to motorists during this phase.

What do the closures mean for me?

  • Signed diversions will be in place for affected motorists.
  • Vehicle access for residents will be maintained from one end of the closure. Our engineers and local signage will keep road users and residents informed.
  • Parking bays will be suspended at times during our work. Signage will be installed in advance to notify of upcoming suspensions.
  • Bus routes may be impacted. We advise residents to contact their service provider for the latest updates on changes to services/routes, timetables and bus stop locations.
  • All businesses will remain open around our closure areas. Access to these commercial properties will be maintained throughout.
  • We’ll work with the local council to ensure refuse collections can continue to be made with as little disruption as possible.
