Why we’re working together
Fire and rescue services have long been embedded in the communities they serve. While different services operate in different regions across the UK, they all have established home safety programmes where they visit some of the most vulnerable households in our communities.
The home safety programmes, sometimes known as Home Fire Safety visits, are extremely effective at engaging hard-to-reach and high-risk households, such as older people, people with disabilities and people with chronic health conditions.
We’ve partnered with all 13 mainland Scottish fire and rescue services, through the Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service, and eight out of nine in our Southern network area to include CO awareness in their home safety programmes.
Through our partner Gas Safe Charity, we’re delivering tailored carbon monoxide safety training to frontline fire and rescue service teams, equipping them to confidently educate households on how to stay safe from CO harm.
Alongside this, we offer all our fire and rescue service partners multilingual CO safety information leaflets for their Home Fire Safety visits, which reflect the languages most widely spoken in the communities we all serve.
Additionally, we provide regional fire and rescue services with access to potentially lifesaving carbon monoxide alarms for their trusted home safety prevention teams to install. This includes accessible alarms for households with sight or hearing impairments.

How to get involved
Arranging a Home Fire Safety visit
If you support a vulnerable household who may benefit from a Home Fire Safety visit, you can find their local fire and rescue service on the National Fire Chiefs Council website.
