Something special is growing for the next-generation after volunteers kicked off a two-part project to upgrade a Kent school's outdoor space.
Colleagues from our Corporate Affairs team and SGN's contracting partners Erith rolled up their sleeves to make a real difference to the grounds at Borough Green Primary School as part of our Community Action Programme (CAP).
The team sprung into action to transform tired and overgrown outdoor spaces. They built planters, made a rockery, replaced a shed, cleared woodland and removed rubbish, before creating a protective separation around the newt pond, helping to safeguard this important wildlife habitat.
SGN's CAP initiative gives our 4,500 colleagues a day of company time each year to support a community organisation or charity of their choice.
This volunteering effort paves the way for the team's activity next year when they'll return to complete the project in the spring. The finishing touches will be added so it's ready for the pupils to enjoy when the weather begins to warm up again.
Projects like this are a brilliant example of how we can work together with our partners to deliver meaningful, lasting benefits to local communities beyond our core work of keeping people safe and warm.
We're incredibly grateful for the generosity of Corkers, who kindly donated wood, soil and plants to support this project. Their contribution, alongside the hard work and enthusiasm of everyone involved, helped us achieve so much this week. But, we're not finished yet! We'll be back in the spring to complete our project and unveil it to the schoolchildren.
