Twenty new apprentices have joined SGN this autumn, taking the first step towards rewarding careers and helping deliver a safe, reliable and sustainable energy future across Britain.
The latest intake sees ten apprentices join teams across Scotland and a further ten begin their careers in southern England, supporting SGN's continued commitment to developing the skilled workforce needed to maintain and upgrade vital energy infrastructure. They’ll be joined in January by 20 more new apprentices across both networks.
The apprentices will gain hands-on experience while working towards industry-recognised qualifications, earning as they learn and developing the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for long-term careers in the energy sector. They’ll combine practical training with classroom-based learning as they develop the knowledge and experience required for their chosen roles.
From engineering and construction skills to safety, customer service and innovation, the programme is designed to equip apprentices with skills for life while creating opportunities for people to build successful careers close to home.
The new recruits join a business that has a long-standing commitment to investing in people and supporting the next generation of talent, helping ensure the company has the skills and expertise needed to meet the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition.
Darren Elsom, a former apprentice who has worked his way up through his career to become Chief Operating Officer at SGN, said: “Apprenticeships are one of the most important ways we bring new talent into our business, and we're delighted to welcome 20 new apprentices to SGN. They’re joining a business that offers rewarding careers, real responsibility and the chance to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve every day. They’ll play a vital role in helping us continue to deliver a safe and reliable service for customers across Scotland and southern England for years to come.”
GMB, one of the biggest unions in the UK energy sector, welcomed SGN’s investment in quality training for skilled jobs.
Rhea Wolfson, GMB Scotland secretary, said: “The company’s clear commitment to apprenticeships and training will help deliver the skills our country needs now and for years to come. The importance of apprenticeship opportunities to our young people, communities and economy cannot be overstated. We wish the newest SGN apprentices every success as they train for the quality jobs and long careers that will secure UK energy for decades ahead.”
Rebecca Conroy, CEO & Principal at East Sussex College Group, and Ian McGurk, Curriculum Manager Building Services at Fife College, which delivers training for SGN apprentices, said: “The transition from education into employment can be one of the biggest steps in a young person’s life. Working closely with employers like SGN helps ensure our learners are developing the practical knowledge and professional behaviours that industry is looking for. We're proud to support this latest group of apprentices as they begin their careers and look forward to seeing them grow in confidence and achieve their full potential over the coming years.”
