Commitment to enhanced wellbeing and emergency preparedness by our unregulated biomethane arm was recognised at last night’s 2025 AD & Biogas Industry Awards.
Green Gas Solutions was presented the prestigious Health & Safety Award in Birmingham for its innovative MEDAL programme developed to respond effectively across all operational and construction sites in the event of a medical incident.
The recognition also celebrates the company’s outstanding safety record and prioritising its people: Green Gas Solutions (and under former name SGN Commercial Services) has accrued over one million man-hours worked without a major incident.
However, following a serious and sudden illness experienced by a colleague on site, it prompted the team to go even further. The MEDEL programme was developed in response and includes:
- Mental health first aid: Promoting a “safe to speak up” culture, with trained mental health first aiders supporting staff and project partners.
- Emergency contact tags: All site personnel now wear hard hats with ICE tags containing vital medical and contact information.
- Defibrillators on site: Every construction and operational site is now equipped with defibrillators at the entrance gate, with staff trained in their use.
- Enhanced support mechanisms: Teams are now better informed about corporate support policies, ensuring rapid and personalised assistance for employees and their families during difficult times.
- Lone working monitors: All staff wear Personal Atmosphere Monitors that include panic and fall alarms, providing an extra layer of protection.
Annabel West, Head of Green Gas Solutions, said: “We’re deeply honoured to receive this award, though it comes from a moment that reminded us how precious and fragile life can be. The illness of our colleague was a wake-up call, and we responded by embedding even stronger safety and wellbeing measures across our operations. This award is a tribute to our team’s commitment to looking after one another - and a reminder that safety is never done, it’s something we must continually evolve.”
Alan Midwinter (pictured), Head of Biomethane Projects, added: "The only way to successfully deliver projects is to value the people and teams around you. In Green Gas Solutions, this is at the core of what we do and continually strive to do better, improving wellbeing, supporting our colleagues and their loved ones, and in making SGN a great place to work."
Green Gas Solutions hopes that by sharing the MEDEL programme, others in the industry can adopt similar life-saving practices. The team remains committed to setting the standard for safety in the biomethane and green gas sector.
The team remain at the NEC in Birmingham today for the World Biogas Expo. They’re at stand E32 showcasing Green Gas Solutions’ “full-wrap” biomethane plant delivery and operation to enable green gas injection into local pipelines to help decarbonise the gas network.
