Last week, we welcomed more than 170 partners, charities, community organisations and advice services to our Safe and Warm Winter Readiness Conference.

Bringing together people from across Scotland and southern England, both in person and online, the event was a chance to reflect on the challenges communities continue to face, share learning and strengthen the partnerships that help people access support when they need it most.

Maureen McIntosh, our Director of Customer Service, reflects on the themes that shaped the day.

As another winter approaches, many households continue to face difficult circumstances. For the organisations attending our event, this reality is seen every day through rising demand for advice, support and practical assistance. People experiencing fuel poverty are often also navigating poor health, caring responsibilities, loneliness, financial pressures or other complex challenges. These issues rarely exist in isolation and neither can the solutions.

That was one of the strongest messages from the conference: the importance of working together.

When SGN first began building its vulnerability partnership network, the ambition was straightforward. The goal was to help 250,000 vulnerable households maintain safe and warm homes by creating stronger links between organisations and connecting people to the support available in their communities. What has developed over the years is something far greater: a network built on trust, collaboration and a shared commitment to improving outcomes for people facing hardship.

The impact of that collaboration is significant. Together, the network has supported almost 1.4m households with energy safeguarding support over its first five years. Since this April alone, partners have already made a positive impact in more than 85,000 households. Yet, while these figures demonstrate scale, they only tell part of the story.

Behind every number is a person.

A carer who feels listened to and understood. A family receiving support before a challenge becomes a crisis. An older person connected to the right service at the right time.

These are the outcomes that matter most and they are only possible because organisations are willing to work together, share knowledge and build pathways that make it easier for people to find help.

Throughout the conference, speakers and panellists highlighted both the challenges facing communities this winter and the opportunities created through evidence-led partnership working, shared learning and community-centred support.

The event provided valuable opportunities to share ideas, strengthen relationships and identify new ways to support communities.

A key theme throughout the day was that lasting solutions are achieved through collaboration across organisations, services and communities. Hosted in Central London and delivered in a hybrid format, the conference brought together organisations from across SGN's regions and strengthened the connections that help make this support possible.

Perhaps the most encouraging takeaway from the day was the collective determination in the room. Despite the challenges communities face, there was a shared commitment to finding solutions, supporting one another and continuing to improve support for people experiencing vulnerability.
