Our planned gas network upgrades
We're preparing to start essential work to upgrade the gas network in the Dartford Road area of Bexley. This work will ensure nearby properties continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come. It's part of a 30-year programme to replace our old metal mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new plastic pipe.
Our project follows close consultation with the local authority and other key stakeholders. It will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to road users, residents and businesses.
To ensure everyone's safety, temporary traffic measures will be introduced while working in the following roads:
Baldwyn's Park
- Starting Monday 5 January
- Lasting approximately three weeks
- Our engineers will be working close to its junction with Tile Kiln Lane.
- Baldwyn's Park will be closed to motorists around our site.
Old Bexley Lane and Dartford Road
- Starting Monday 19 January
- Lasting approximately ten weeks
- Temporary traffic lights will be installed as we progress from Old Bexley Lane, to Dartford Road and then onto Vicarage Road.
- We may also need to close some side roads for safety.
Wansunt Road
- Monday 9 February
- Lasting approximately four weeks
- We'll be working along Wansunt Road to its junction with Heath Road.
- Wansunt Road will be closed to motorists around our site.
St Mary's Road
- Starting Monday 16 February
- Lasting approximately three weeks
- Our engineers will be working near its junction with Dartford Road.
- A section of St Mary's Road will be closed for the duration of this phase.
Hill Crescent
- Starting Monday 23 February
- Lasting approximately three weeks
- Temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Hill Crescent and Dartford Road.
Vicarage Road
- Starting Monday 2 March
- Lasting approximately three weeks
- Temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Vicarage Road and Hill Crescent.
What do the closures mean for me?
- Signed diversions will be in place for affected motorists.
- Vehicle access for residents within the closure points will change as works progress. Our engineers and local signage will keep road users and residents informed.
- All businesses will remain open around our closure areas. Access to these commercial properties will be maintained throughout.
- Bus routes may be impacted. We advise residents to contact their service provider for the latest updates on changes to services/routes, timetables and bus stop locations.
- We’ll work with the local council to ensure refuse collections can continue to be made with as little disruption as possible.
- Emergency services will be informed about the road closure and will have contingency plans in place while roads are closed.
We recognise roadworks can be frustrating, and we're sorry for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years, which means when the work is complete, local residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
