We're preparing to carry out essential gas network upgrades in the Tilburstow Hill Road area of Godstone.
This work will ensure properties across Godstone continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come. It's part of a 30-year programme to replace our old metal mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new plastic pipe.
Our project follows close consultation with the local authority and other key stakeholders. It will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to road users, residents and businesses.
Our phases of work
Water Lane
- Starting Monday 1 September
- Lasting approximately eight weeks
We'll be replacing our pipes in sections along the full length of Water Lane.
To ensure everyone's safety, Water Lane will be closed to motorists in both directions.
Tilburstow Hill Road
- Starting Monday 29 September
- Lasting approximately 23 weeks
Our engineers will be replacing our old pipe along Tilburstow Hill Road, between Rosedene Farm and Yew Tree Farm.
Tilburstow Hill Road will be closed around our work area during this time. The closure area will move as we progress down the road.
What do the closures mean for me?
- Signed diversions will be in place for affected motorists.
- Vehicle access for residents within the closure points will change as works progress. Our engineers and local signage will keep road users and residents informed.
- All businesses will remain open around our closure areas. Access to these commercial properties will be maintained throughout.
- Bus routes will be impacted. We advise residents to contact their service provider for the latest updates on changes to services/routes, timetables and bus stop locations.
- We’ll work with the local council to ensure refuse collections can continue to be made with as little disruption as possible.
- Emergency services will be informed about the road closure and will have contingency plans in place while roads are closed.
Temporary traffic lights will also be installed along A22 Eastbourne Road to make the new connections to our network. We’re still liaising with Surrey County Council on when this will be carried out.
Our gas network upgrade project is unrelated to the collapse and the council's subsequent work on the High Street nearby. However, the council have granted us access to replace 300m of old metal mains, and upgrade approximately 30 individual services, within their closure area. We've agreed to work collaboratively while the road is currently closed to avoid future disruption. Our engineers will be working in High Street from Monday 6 October.
We recognise roadworks can be frustrating, and we're sorry for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years, which means when the work is complete, Godstone residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
