Lower Green West, Mitcham

SGN is working in collaboration with Merton Council and Thames Water to improve the resilience of the local infrastructure in the Lower Green West area of Mitcham. Our work will involve upgrading the gas network in the area and in delivering both sets of works simultaneously, it is anticipated that 28 days of additional roadworks will be avoided.

This project is part of the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) collaborative ‘dig once’ scheme to minimise disruption to the area. We will continue to work closely with Merton Council and the GLA to ensure this project is delivered as efficiently as possible.

Details of the works:

  • SGN will be replacing old metal gas mains with new plastic pipes. This essential work will ensure that the community will continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.
  • Thames Water will be replacing old water pipes with new stronger ones. This is to ensure that Thames Water continues to provide a reliable service now and in the future.
  • Merton Council will utilise the closures to complete Highways drainage clearance, repair and upgrades.

Phasing and timings of the works

Works are programmed to be carried out from Monday 14 July for approximately nine weeks. During this time, you’ll see us working at the following times:

  • Monday to Friday from 8am - 6pm
  • Saturday from 8am - 2pm

For ease, the work will be completed in two phases.

Phase 1
Lower Green West, South - London Road to outside School Church Road.

Work will start on Monday 14 July for approximately four weeks. The area around the work site will need to be closed to ensure everyone’s safety.

Phase 2
Lower Green West, North – outside Vine Cottages to Sibford Court and then Sibford Court to London Road.

Work will start on 13 August for approximately five weeks. The area around the work site will need to be closed to ensure everyone's safety.

What this means:

  • If you live within the area being temporarily closed, access will be maintained and if you have any special requirements or need to arrange access for people with disabilities, please contact us here: customer@sgn.co.uk.
  • Please advise delivery drivers and visitors about the road closures.
  • Please allow extra time for your journey.
  • Please check your bus provider’s website for any alterations to timings or bus stops.

Temporary bus service

In partnership with Thames Water, we have arranged for Transport for London to run a temporary shuttle service to ensure that a transport service remains available for public use. This service will be numbered 700. This service will serve bus stops normally served by the 200 bus (which will be diverted for the below stops during the works and road closures). The replacement shuttle bus will therefore service the following stops:

  • Towards Mitcham, Church Road: Christchurch Road, Colliers Wood High Street, Priory Road, Christchurch Road, Church Road, Haslemere Avenue, Phipps Bridge Road, Church Road, Church Road Roundabout
  • Towards Colliers Wood: Church Road Roundabout, Church Road, Phipps Bridge Road, Haslemere Avenue, Church Road, Christchurch Road

We appreciate this work may be disruptive for local residents and road users and we assure you that we are working together to do everything we can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible. We’re sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding.
