Essential gas main replacement – Havant Road, Portsmouth
Temporary traffic lights and side road closures required
From Tuesday 5 May for approximately 12 weeks, our contractors FPF Utilities Limited carry out work to replace the gas main along Havant Road in Portsmouth.
We will be replacing the old metal gas pipe with new plastic pipe between the junction of St Matthews Road to the junction with Lendorber Avenue.
Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road, for everyone’s safety, we will need to have temporary multi-way and two-way traffic lights in operation. To avoid further traffic lights, we will be temporarily closing side road junctions as we progress along the road.
We'll be carrying out the work in the following intended phases. Each phase will take approximately three weeks to complete:
Phase one: working between junctions of St Matthews Road and St Colemans Road
Traffic management – temporary multi-way lights on Havant Road and a side road closure on St Matthews Road
Phase two: working between the junctions of St Colemans Avenue and Mulberry Lane
Traffic management – temporary multi-way lights on Havant Road
Phase three: working between the junctions of Mulberry Lane and Lendorber Avenue
Traffic management – temporary multi-way lights on Havant Road and side road closures on Mulberry Lane and Burrill Avenue
Phase four: working on the four-way junction of Havant Road / Lendorber Avenue / Lodge Avenue
Traffic management – temporary multi-way lights and pedestrian crossing closed
Advance warning signs will be in place ahead of side road closures.
Why were these works not completed before Havant Road was resurfaced?
The gas main replacement programme is planned in order of risk and priority. These pipes were not due to be completed for another two years.
Due to the number of recent disruptive gas escapes and the deterioration of the old gas pipes, we have urgently planned the replacement of these pipes to ensure we can continue to maintain a safe and efficient gas supply to residents and the community and avoid further disruptive gas escapes.
We understand the road has recently been resurfaced; we will work closely with the council to ensure the resurfacing work we need to carry out is in line with the council’s expectations.
We appreciate our work can be disruptive for residents and the local community - our engineers will be doing everything they can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
